REELS

HIGHLIGHT REEL

This is a collection of various shows, showcasing different elements of producing and utilizing my team. This is a collection of breaking news, weather, and local content that showcases various techniques I have learned in producing. I try to make every show open different and unique, while showcasing the most important parts of the story I am trying to tell.

BUILDING OUT THE LEAD

Only days after Hurricane Helene destroyed parts of North Carolina and Florida, Hurricane Milton was headed for the western coast of Florida. Our reporters had done a little bit of coverage on how Missouri Task Force 1 was helping in the south, and our Chief meteorologist had graphics and new information on when and where Milton was going to hit. We also had quite a bit of national coverage on pervious destruction and how Florida was preparing for the next storm. My reporter this night had a package about Mo Task force’s extended stay in the south and the dayside reporter covered a local story on community efforts to help those in need. I decided on an umbrella open, explaining each story, with a live toss from our reporter to our Meteorologist. From there, we went to national news, and wrapped up with local community efforts.

TEAM COVERAGE

I worked the night of primaries and the general election in Missouri, and this was a great experience to use team coverage. The reporter’s stories were really what made this show, as they all covered different candidates and watch parties. I wanted to come up with a good way to showcase everyone, including the anchors right at the top of the show to let viewers know what they are about to watch. When producing team coverage, I have to be in contact with 3+ reporters, as well as our anchors and meteorologists. On the night of 2024, I worked with 8 reporters! I was in contact with these reporters all evening, making sure their stories were going to get in the show on time. Since most of the spots our reporters were in were very busy, there were issues with keeping in contact for a live cue. As a producer, I made the decision to switch the location of the reporter because his live shot was more important than what was behind him.

DEBATE COVERAGE

I have been able to cover every debate this election season, and with that comes choosing soundbites that might fit well with the show. For the first debate, I made sure I finished the rest of my show as early as possible, so I had time to focus on sound bites. The debate started at 8pm, and the show was at 9pm, so I quickly picked two bites from each candidate on one topic and butted them together. I decided not to make this the lead, because those who truly care about the debate were watching it on a different channel. Instead, I created an umbrella lead with weather and had our reporter story near the top as well. For the second and third debates, I produced the 10pm show, and had time for a package to release. I believe that local news is very important, and choose to do an umbrella lead for one show, and headlines for the next to let viewers know we had local coverage as well as debate coverage.
